Six contractors bid on $3.1 million Salem Wharf project By Justin A. Rice, Town Correspondent | Article Courtesy of:  Boston.com Six contractors submitted bids earlier this week for the $3.1 million Salem Wharf project after the city extended its original deadline on the request for proposals by two weeks. In December the federal and state government gave Salem the green light to begin construction on Salem Wharf — a long sought after economic boon that could expand cruise ship traffic as well as draw whale watching and fishing boats to the pier.  The improvements have been sought for 20 years, and Mayor Kim Driscoll has tried to secure funding for the project since she took office in 2006. Salem So Sweet festival set to start this weekend The following is a press release from Salem Main Streets: More than 15 beautiful ice sculptures will grace downtown Salem starting February 11 as part of the 10th annual Salem's So Sweet Chocolate and Ice Sculpture Festival. Ice Sculpture Themes include a dragon, Marilyn Monroe, the SSU Viking, TinTin and Snowy, a crystal snowflake, a one room school house and the Salem Witch.  Many downtown businesses will offer discounts and free chocolate during the weekend as well. Cabot, 78, opened the city's first witch shop more than 40 years ago and currently runs The Official Witch Shoppe on Pickering Wharf. She announced the Jan. 31 closing on her website. "Closing my store was a very difficult decision, but one that I am pleased with," she wrote. "It has been a dream come true to have had the experience of operating my stores and the countless wonderful people I have met." Cabot declined to be interviewed for this article. During the shop's peak production period from October through December, nearly 100 employees will fill the red-brick building on Leavitt Street in Salem's Point neighborhood, preparing thousands of handmade chocolates for the holiday season.
